When I moved back to California I registered as an independent to match my voting record, 3 republicans and 4 democrats for president in the last 28 years.

I had been a republican all of my life.
We had good republicans in Somerset County N. New Jersey where I lived for last 45 years.
Millicent Fenwick was called the "Conscience of the Congress" by Walter Cronkite, Governors Tom Kean and Christie Whitman were moderates.
Even Nixon despite his faults signed the clean water act, clean air act and established the EPA.
I wasn't a real fan of Regan, but he was pro-immigration and in favor of free markets.

But it became an embarrassment to be republican in 2016.
It was not just President Trump, but things like:

The refusal of the republican senate to vote on Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland for the Supreme Court.
Republican state restrictive voting laws targeting minorities.
Republican politicians denial of climate change.

And the list goes on.
