Panoramic Dublin, Irish Countryside & Glendalough - DB04 $69
1.5 hrs one way
Take the undeniably charming capital city of Dublin, the serenity of the Irish countryside and combine them with the picturesque setting of Glendalough's monastic ruins for an extraordinary introduction into Ireland's many faces. Head south from Dublin and you will soon be traveling into the green and uncrowded Wicklow Mountains with their rounded heath covered summits, pretty valleys, and the impressive monastic remains of Glendalough. Whether in "Dublin's Fair City," or in the peaceful countryside which surrounds it, you will enjoy a leisurely encounter with a colorful heritage. A short stop is made at the Avoca Woolen Mill, where the colors in the various woven products reflect the beauty of the surrounding scenery, and where you will have a short time for shopping.
You then travel to the important early Christian site of Glendalough, the glen of the two lakes, which has overwhelmed people with its peace and isolation for many centuries. It is an enclave of holiness amongst the wilderness. Its setting is unforgettable, high in the hills, with two small lakes cupped in a hollow. The steep, wooded slopes harbor one of Ireland's most atmospheric monastic sites. There are the remains of a famous monastic school, founded by St. Kevin in 520 AD, remains of the churches spread between the upper and lower lakes, one of the best preserved Round Towers in the country, and a roofless cathedral. This most romantic of monastic sites was one of Ireland's greatest pilgrimage centers up to the middle of the 19th century. You'll return through the Wicklow Hills, with more magnificent scenery to enjoy as you head back towards Dublin.
