When I travel overseas I have an international SIM card I use to replace the standard SIM card in my GSM (AT&T or T-Mobile) phone.
This disables my local phone number and gives me a number with reduced roaming charges overseas.

You can use either the US number or UK number .
To dial the UK number from outside England or Scotland you need to dial the International Direct Dial (IDD) access code (011 in the US) first.

Note: When I have access to Wi-Fi it will be cheaper to use Skype, but I have to know when you are calling and turn on Skype or Google Chat.
